I'm Meredith, Dallas based newborn and family photographer. I'm here to capture your family's special bond and make sure you look and feel good doing it.

NOTE —

If your blog post's featured images are fairly low resolution, you may want to delete the top image canvas. Your blog will still look gorgeous, but the top banner section looks best when you upload an image that's 2500px on the long side. You can also use our fave TinyJpeg to make them small so your blog posts still load quickly!

Prepping your home for an in-home newborn session

January 24, 2024

My favorite place for Dallas newborn photo sessions is actually your home. There’s many reasons why I love in-home newborn sessions, and you can read about them here. Once you have decided on having your newborn session at your home, it’s time to prep and I’m here to walk you through it. Don’t worry, it’s much easier than you may think.

1. Find the good light

In order to help your photographer get the very best images possible, you are going to want to study your home. All you have to do is on a sunny day look around your house at different times of the day and make note of when your home gets the most light in certain rooms. The light in your house is not going to be great in all rooms at a certain time, but there will probably be at least one period of time that either your primary bedroom, the living room or the dining rooms gets that pretty sunlight streaming through the windows. That’s what you’re looking for. If you’re still unsure, snap some pictures (with the overhead lights turned off) and send them to your photographer (me!), they will be able to help you assess the light and choose the best time for your session.

2. Hide the clutter

You do not need to do a full deep clean before your in-home newborn session. I promise you that my house also has toys all over the floor and clutter on the counters, pretty much all the time. All you need to do is hide it in the spaces that we will not be using. That means, maybe shoving it in a closet, putting it in a kids room or just pushed to the side in a corner. Also, if you don’t have time to do this before I get there, I am more than happy to help you make the space ideal for our session. It’s your home, it’s ok for it to feel like people live there.

3. Feed baby

We are aiming for baby to be happy and maybe even a little sleepy during the photo session so feeding them 15 minutes or so before I get there typically helps with that. It doesn’t always work out, baby’s have a mind and temperament of their own and I promise we will get great images no matter what, but we still want to do our best to set them up for success. If you need to take a break to feed baby again, that is completely fine and expected. A fed baby is a happy baby.

Honestly, if you follow these three steps and come to the photo session relaxed and ready to love on your new baby, everything else falls into place. This is your chance to be present with your family and let me so the rest.
