Newborn sessions don’t have to be stiff and overly posed. In fact, they don’t have to follow any rules at all. Newborn photos, to me, are just like any other family photos, which means they should be unique to you and your life.
Here’s 3 rules that I would encourage you to break for your newborn session:
1. Newborn photos should be taken in the first 10-14 days after your baby is born.
Newborn photos can be taken at anytime you want. In fact, I find most people enjoy having their newborn photos scheduled around the 3-4 week mark. This gives you time to adjust to your new rhythm, heal, and feel ready to welcome someone into your home. But that doesn’t mean that if you failed to schedule newborn photos in the first month that you’ve missed your chance. Each month brings something new and special about your baby, so it’s never too late to schedule a newborn session.
2. Everyone should wear white or cream for newborn photos.
While I love neutrals, and I do recommend neutrals for your baby, the rest of your family should feel free to bring in color and personality. You should never model your session off of what you’ve seen others do, just because it seems like the “right” way to do it. Not a dress person? Wear jeans or a loose pair of linen pants. Neutrals not your thing? Dress your family in color! Don’t be afraid to make it your own.
3. You should have a magazine-worthy home to take your newborn session at home.
Just like your clothes should a reflection of you, so should your home. You do not need a large, perfectly decorated house to get great newborn photos at home. In fact, most of the time you will see very little of your actual house in the photos. All we need in a little corner of good light to create dynamic photos of your family. Don’t let your lived-in home stop you from scheduling the newborn photos that you want.

I’m Meredith, a Dallas based family & newborn photographer, mother of three who is passionate about creating images that you’ll love.
Less but better is a constant battle in my life. With so much being thrown at us daily, begging us to add more and more to our lives, I find myself fighting against the urge to purchase yet another thing I don’t actually need. What I really desire is more meaning. I want to fill my home with furniture that’s passed down from my grandparents, memories from our travels, photos of my babies, and handmade heirlooms. I want to take the time to save up for something with meaning versus purchasing a quick fix. I want to add value to my life and home, not clutter.
That’s why I believe so strongly in providing a full service experience, from planning to session to heirloom quality prints and albums. As a busy mother of three myself, I know that you don’t have any extra time in your day, which is why I want to take the load off of you and put the quality straight into your hands – a cherished memento, a timeless piece of art to add to your life.
